We can do no great things, only small things with great love.

(Mother Teresa)

Dear friends of Heartkids,

Greetings from the monsoon. As we have had very little rain until now, we are grateful for every single drop that falls into the wells and lakes. You only appreciate how vital water is when you are in a dry country.

At the moment I am sitting on the flat roof of the Heartkids Home and listen to the cheerful children’s laughter from below. It is wonderful to hear our sixty kids play and run around happily. I can also hear the gentle splashing of the midday washing-up-water and the three-week old calf (with a heart on its forehead, of course) mooing for its mother.

kaelbchen_im_hh

We got back to India safely. I was very moved by the colourful and rapturous welcome – it was so touching so see how much everybody here appreciates the work done by Heartkids. I am lucky to be able to experience the gratefulness right here in person, but I am only a small piece in the Heartkids structure and for this reason I would like to use this opportunity to forward the “thanks” directly to you all because without our devoted supporters all this would not be possible. Only together we can make Heartkids flourish:

Currently, there are 22 little girls and boys in the kindergarten at the Kidscenter Tiruvannamalai. The kids are currently enjoying not only the loving care of our Indian staff but also of our two interns from Germany.

In the evenings, our gang of 150 bubbly students charges into the rooms where they are tutored and receive further support in various areas.

Unfortunately, violence is commonplace of the daily lives of these children. That is why it is even more important for them to be able to get away from their bleak everyday lives for a few hours every day and experience loving attention.

Sometimes it seems to me as if the parents “needed” to take their frustration and despair at their hard life out on their children and that is not always easy to bear.

We at Heartkids can make a contribution to making the lives of the families we support easier but there are things which will probably only change slowly over the course of generations.

Our little ones

A few days ago, I talked with 13-year-old Kausalya – a delicate girl who in Germany I probably would have taken to be 9 years old. She told me that her mother had been ill a lot during the last few weeks and that she had had to work in her stead as a household servant – for a tourist from Germany… She had tears in her eyes while she told me all this and it is so obvious how much she longs for an untroubled life.

In our “Tribal Kidscenter” with the native Indians we also have to fight time and again to ensure that the girls do not have to leave school early to slave away as servant for rich families for scant wages.

We are therefore all the happier to support quite a few of “our” girls in getting a college education, thus saving them from such a life. The longer education also prevents the girls from being married off early.

The same is true for the girls and young women who every day attend our Education Center, which was opened in February. The Center has proved its worth and is attended by more than 30 enthusiastic women every day. Prior to the beginning of their training, some of the women eked out such a miserable existence in their huts that I would not have dared to dream that they would enjoy to learn to tailor clothes so much.

 THANK YOU

In the name of our kids, I wholeheartedly thank everyone who has contributed for the successful Heartkids year 2011 and wish you all a relaxed and peaceful holiday season and, of course, a merry Christmas.

    "Actions speak louder than words."

    (Erich Kästner)

    Dear friends of Heartkids,

Here is our current Heartkids newsletter. First of all, a big warm welcome to all first-time readers. Thanks for joining us.

    1. News from India

In India, the new school year finally started in the mid of June. Due to the elections and a new government in Tamil Nadu, the summer holidays were spontaneously extended by more than two weeks as new textbooks had to be printed. When in Rome, do as the Romans doGrinsen.

After this delay, the Heartkids are now enjoying the lessons all the more. Equipped with new uniforms, schoolbags and lots of other school material, they eagerly started the new school year.

    7_11_schulbus

Due to tragic deaths in the last months in the Heartkids environment, we have three new children – even if the Heartkids Home is now virtually bursting at the seams, I am thankful and glad that these orphans have been given a new perspective. Two of the kids still need sponsors (30 or 15 euros per month).

For some time now we have been dreaming of a “Heartkids Girls Home” and we are currently actively looking for a suitable plot; when we succeed, some of the girls from the Heartkids Home will be able to move and there will be new room for children in need.

7_11_maedchen The courses in the Education Center continue to be well attended. During the Indian summer holidays, due to the great interest, the computer courses were offered in three shifts every day, thus making it possible to reach as many adolescents as possible. It is great to see how the young women are gaining confidence, and acquire and develop skills every day.

    2. Wanted: College sponsors

Some of our girls who have been attending our Heartkids Center for years have successfully graduated from school (10th or 12th form) and would like to study at a private college, which offers them great job prospects. The 2- or 3-year degrees cost about 250 euros per semester and we would be delighted to find “college sponsors” who are willing to support these committed young women with 500 euros per year. As these girls grew up in poverty, a good education is a great gift for them which will open up totally new opportunities.

If you are interested in becoming a college sponsor, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    3. Greeting card sale

Three beautiful greeting cards with themes from India are now available. They can be sold at parties, in the circle of friends, in schools or in doctor’s offices (donation of 1.50 euro per card). If you are interested, please contact me directly.

    7_11_postkarten

By now, a team of 30 Indian staff in four different Heartkids projects looks after about 300 children and adolescents. And it is you who make all this possible – thank you very much for your continuing support.

    7_11_tribal_kids

From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all the best and a great summer

    Dear Friends of Heartkids,

Summer is coming to an end and it is time to tell you about what’s going on with the Heartkids.

Mid of August the construction works for the Heartkids Education Center started and they are progressing well. We are grateful and happy that thanks to your help we were able to begin so soon with the realisation of this project.

    educationcenter

Those of you who are interested in supporting this education centre for our teen heartkids with 15 €, may do so by buying the 2011 Heartkids Calender (29.7cm x 21 cm). This calendar with its colorful impressions (see picture below) of the Heartkids, the holy mountain Arunchala and life in Tirunvannamalai is a gem. All the proceeds from the sale will go to our latest project.

If you would like to buy a calendar, please transfer 16,50 € (incl. postage and packing) to our donations account and send a email containing the delivery address to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Of course, it is also possible to buy several calendars and sell them on (e.g. at fall or christmas fairs, in offices, at weddings or birthday parties).

    kalender_rundbrief

In June, the new school year started. We are proud to announce that our oldest heartkid from the Heartkids Home passed his school leaving examination and now goes to college. Four other adolescents successfully completed 10th grade (Satish was even the best of the school) and will take the school leaving examination within the next two years at an advanced secondary school.

The little heartkids are also well and enjoy every-day life in the Heartkids Home and in our day care centres. Like always at the beginning of the new school year, the distribution of the new school supplies was lots of fun.

In the Heartkids Home some construction measures had to be carried out in the very hot and dry summer: For the first time, we suffered from water shortage and water became so scarce that we decided to drill a new well. Our existing well was desludged and cleaned so that we now have two different wells on the premises.

    maedels_ausbildung

As some of you already know, I am still in Germany.

After a long time in hospital and many operations my little son Joshua is finally getting better. It is a very intense experience for me after the years in India in which I dedicated myself to the Heartkids to be suddenly thrown back on my own private life and, for the first time in a long time, to spend time in Germany. Very deep down I feel that this is all right and so I am grateful for this experience.

Thanks to modern technology and my dedicated husband „on site“, I am in daily contact with the Heartskids projects and I am, of course, still involved in all decisions.

Moreover, the older girls and boys from the Heartkids Home keep me updated by means of letters.

    letters2010

At the end of November, we will finally go back to India and stay in Tiruvannamalai during winter. We are eagerly awaited by the Heartkids and I am also really looking forward to the reunion.

The natural disasters of the last months with their shocking consequences have shown once again how much we humans need each other, how much we depend on each other for making life a dignified one in the world. This will only be possible if we work together. This will only be possible if every individual assumes responsibility for our planet earth.

Although it is so sad to know about all this suffering, it is wonderful to see how many people allow themselves to be touched by the desperation of the people in far away  places – may this empathy help that everyone finds out for themselves how he or she can make the world a more peaceful and liveable place.

I would like to extend heartfelt thanks for your support and dedication.

    All the best

    Heartkids-News October 2009 Print E-mail

    Dear friends of Heartkids,

Life follows its own path: I had planned to be back in India for a long time now; after all, I have not seen my heartkids for more than six months and we have never been apart for such a long time. But the flow of life took me in another direction: our little son Joshua had to have an operation on his kidney; there had been indications for this already during pregnancy. Now everything is ok, the wounds are healing and in a few weeks we will probably be ready for returning to the heartkids. Initially, however, we will only be “visiting” for two or three months as we will use the German medical system for the checkups.

I ask for your understanding in this matter– it is not that I am less close to the heartkids than before but life seems to force me to take a small break. After four and a half intensive years abroad, it was apparently time to take a deep breath and take care of me and my own little family. Despite living through disturbing weeks, I have gained a lot of strength to go back and take care of the big heartkids family with new enthusiasm.

When I read the letters of my Indian children, I cannot wait to see them again.

Since this year’s interns from Germany are already in Tiruvannamalai, there are new pictures. Raja and Viji, the Chairmen of the Inidan Heartkids Trust,
are also honing their picture taking capabilities.

I would like to give a big thank you to all those who despite “summer slump” have actively supported us and who do not tire of championing the heartkids.

Here in India, autumn is approaching; in Tamil Nadu the monsoon season is around the corner. Let us hope that it will bring enough water for the coming
months but not cause much damage.

I will come back to you in a few weeks with news directly from heartkids land.

    Love,
    Judith

    Dear Heartkids-Friends!

Although here in the Indian city of Tiruvannamalai only looking at the calendar tells us that Christmas is approaching, I would like to wish all of you a peaceful and merry Christmas together with your loved ones!

    kerzenherz.jpg

And like every year, in behalf of the Heartkids and the entire Heartkids-teams, I would like to thank everyone, who is involved in our Heartkids foundation in their own special way. This year we had the chance to get to know many new people that got touched by our work and now support our foundation. That means a lot to us!

Have a good and happy new year 2009!

    With love,
